Why it’s needed ❗
Variable valve timing adjusts overlap between intake and exhaust events. By shifting the exhaust cam angle, the engine breathes efficiently at low and high RPM, balancing torque, economy, and emissions.
How it works ⚙️
An oil control valve directs pressurized oil to internal chambers. The rotor indexes the cam a few degrees advance/retard relative to the sprocket. A lock pin holds a safe base position at start-up, then releases once oil pressure rises to prevent rattle.
If it fails
Expect cold-start rattle, rough idle, loss of power, poor fuel use, and a check engine light (often P0014/P0024). Prolonged mis-timing can overheat the catalytic converter and raise emissions.
Tech tips ️
Use clean 0W‑20/5W‑30 oil, verify OCV and filter screens, align timing marks carefully, torque to spec, and perform idle/VVT relearn after install.
