This gear precisely rotates the intake cam relative to the crankshaft to match load and RPM. By advancing or retarding valve timing, it boosts low-end torque, improves highway fuel economy, and cuts emissions. How it works ⏱️

The engine ECU commands the oil control valve to feed pressurized oil into the gear’s internal chambers. A vane-and-rotor mechanism then shifts the cam phase in degrees. Seals, a locking pin (on some versions),and tight tolerances hold position during hot and cold starts. Clean oil is critical for accurate, fast actuation.
