Engine Flywheel Assembly ⚙️

This heavy-duty flywheel is a key drivetrain part that links the engine crankshaft to the clutch and gearbox. It is needed to store rotational energy, smooth engine pulses, and help the vehicle pull away cleanly from a stop without stalling. In daily driving, it also reduces vibration and supports stable idle.

How It Works

Bolted to the crankshaft, the flywheel spins with the engine. Its mass acts like a “rotating battery,” keeping momentum between combustion strokes. The clutch disc clamps against its friction surface to transfer power into the transmission. On many setups, the starter motor also engages the ring gear on the flywheel to crank the engine.

If It’s Worn or Broken

A damaged flywheel can cause clutch shudder, slipping, gear-changes that feel harsh, and rattling at idle. Bad heat spots or cracks may lead to burning smell, vibrations under load, and faster clutch wear. Severe failure can prevent starting or damage the clutch and starter components.
