Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal (Engine Back Seal) οΈ
This seal sits at the back of the engine where the crankshaft exits to meet the flywheel or flexplate. Its job is simple but critical: keep engine oil inside while the crankshaft spins at high RPM. Without a tight seal here, oil will escape and make a mess fast.
Why this seal is needed β
The crankshaft rotates constantly, and oil pressure plus crankcase vapors try to push oil outward. This part creates a controlled barrier so lubrication stays where it belongsβinside the engineβprotecting bearings and keeping the clutch/torque converter area dry.
How it works βοΈ
A precision rubber sealing lip rides on the crankshaft surface. A small spring keeps steady tension as the shaft turns, while the outer shell locks into the engine block or rear cover to prevent seepage around the seal body.
If itβs worn or broken
You may notice oil dripping from the bellhousing area, burning-oil smell, low oil level, or a slipping clutch (manual). Left untreated, the engine can run low on oil, leading to severe internal wear and costly repairs.
