Camshaft Thrust Cover Assembly ️

This engine cover is a small but critical piece that helps control camshaft end play (side-to-side movement) in the cylinder head. It is needed to keep valve timing stable, reduce internal friction, and protect nearby sealing surfaces from wear. When fitted correctly, it supports smooth camshaft rotation and helps your engine stay quiet and efficient.

How it works ⚙️

The cover bolts to the head and forms a precise thrust surface for the camshaft. As oil pressure builds, lubrication forms a thin film between the cam and thrust face, preventing metal-to-metal contact. This keeps the camshaft aligned so the timing components and valve train work as designed.

What happens if it’s worn or damaged ❗

If the thrust face wears, the camshaft can “walk,” causing ticking noises, uneven idle, timing drift, and accelerated wear of the cam lobes and bearings. In severe cases you may get oil leaks, poor performance, and risk of valve train damage that can lead to costly cylinder head repairs.

When to replace

Replace it during head work, camshaft replacement, or if you see scoring, cracks, or excessive cam end play during inspection.
