Rain Detection Sensor for Automatic Wipers

How it works ⚙️

An infrared emitter sends light into the windshield. When the glass is dry, the return signal is strong; water droplets scatter the beam and the signal drops. The control chip measures this change and commands the wiper system via LIN/CAN or a dedicated trigger line. Sensitivity is set from the stalk ring. A clear optical gel pad couples the sensor to the glass; clean, smooth glass is essential for stable readings.

What happens if it’s broken ❗

• Auto mode does nothing or wipes randomly in dry weather
• Wipers stuck fast/slow, or start late in rain
• Warning/message in cluster (model dependent)
• Headlamp auto function may act erratically if combined unit

Tech tips

• Replace the optical gel if cloudy or with bubbles
• Mount behind the interior mirror, on the frit area
• Degrease glass; avoid air gaps; press evenly
• After install, cycle ignition and test sensitivity
