Extension Housing Oil Seal

This oil seal is a small but critical barrier that keeps transmission/transfer-case oil exactly where it belongs—inside the extension housing area. A healthy seal prevents leaks, protects bearings and bushings, and helps the driveline run smooth and quiet ⚙️.

Why this seal is needed

The extension housing cover area faces constant heat, oil splash, and shaft rotation. The seal maintains correct lubrication level and blocks dirt and water from entering the housing.

How it works

Its flexible sealing lip rides on the rotating surface and creates a controlled contact line. A spring-loaded edge keeps steady pressure as parts expand with temperature. The outer case grips the bore to stop oil from creeping around the seal body.

What happens if it’s worn or broken

If the seal hardens, cracks, or the lip gets grooved, oil starts to seep or drip. Low oil can lead to overheating, whining noise, vibration, and accelerated wear of internal components. Contamination can also damage surfaces fast, turning a minor leak into a major repair ?.
