Steering Rack Housing Grommet (No.2) – Purpose 🛞
This steering rack grommet seals and centers the rack where it passes the body/subframe. It blocks dust and water, keeps grease in, and cushions the gear against vibration. A fresh grommet maintains quiet steering, tight feel, and long rack life.
How It Works 🔧
The molded elastomer sleeve sits in the rack housing bracket. Its lips compress to create a flexible seal, while the body acts like a small rack housing bushing. This isolates road shocks, stabilizes lateral movement, and helps the rack stay aligned under load for precise input.
If Worn or Torn ⚠️
Expect clunks on bumps, vague on-center feel, and extra play. Moisture and grit can reach the rack, accelerating inner tie rod and pinion wear, causing corrosion and grease washout. You may notice steering noise, wandering, and failed inspection due to leaks/deteriorated rubber.
Replacement Tips ✅
Install into a clean seat; use silicone-based lubricant, not petroleum. Torque brackets to spec, check rack boots and inner rods, and realign if needed. As this is the “No.2” position, replacing paired grommets together restores balance. OEM-fit geometry ensures easy, rattle-free assembly. 🚗
