Front Strut Bearing (Upper Mount Bearing)

This suspension bearing sits at the top of the front strut assembly and allows the strut to rotate smoothly when you turn the steering wheel. It is needed because MacPherson-type front suspension uses the strut as both a shock absorber and a steering pivot point—without a healthy bearing, steering effort increases and ride quality drops.

How It Works ⚙️

Inside the mount, the bearing supports vehicle weight while letting the spring/strut turn with minimal friction. It keeps the strut centered, reduces binding, and helps maintain correct steering return-to-center. A good bearing also cuts noise and vibration transferred into the body.

Signs of Failure & What Happens if Broken ❗

When worn or seized, it can cause clunking over bumps, creaking while steering, uneven tire wear, and a “notchy” steering feel. If ignored, the spring may wind-up and release suddenly, the mount can deteriorate, alignment can drift, and the strut and tires may wear faster—making the car less stable and less safe.
