Drive Belt Tensioner Pulley Assembly
This component keeps the serpentine belt tight so the alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, and power steering run efficiently. It stops belt slip, squeal, and heat glazing, protects accessories, and maintains correct charging and cooling performance. A healthy belt tensioner pulley is essential for reliable daily driving and fuel economy.
How it works ⚙️
A preloaded spring presses a pivoting arm that carries a low-friction bearing and crowned pulley. As belt length changes with load and temperature, the arm moves to keep constant tension and straight tracking. The internal damper controls arm oscillation, preventing belt flutter at idle and high RPM.
What happens if it fails
- Cold-start squeal, chirp, or rattling
- Belt glazing, fraying, or cracks
- Pulley wobble or rough bearing noise
- Dim lights, overheating, weak steering assist
