This engine timing unit is a key part of the CVVT system used on many Hyundai & Kia small gasoline engines. It is needed to adjust the intake camshaft timing on the fly, so the engine can idle smoothly, pull better at low RPM, and still breathe well at higher RPM. ✅

How it works

Engine oil pressure is routed through the unit to rotate the camshaft slightly in relation to the timing chain. The ECU commands the change based on RPM, load, and temperature. By advancing or retarding valve timing, it improves fuel economy and reduces emissions without sacrificing driveability.

What happens if it’s worn or fails

If this part sticks, leaks internally, or loses its locking ability, the cam timing becomes unstable. Common results include rough idle, slow acceleration, higher fuel use, rattling on start-up, misfires, and a check engine light with cam timing correlation codes. Continued driving may cause poor combustion and extra stress on the timing set.
