Why this part is needed

This upper housing seals the cylinder head with a precise gasket, keeps lubricating oil inside, and protects camshafts and valve gear. It also manages crankcase ventilation through PCV passages. A healthy cover prevents oil leaks, keeps spark plug wells dry, and holds the right vacuum for smooth idle and stable emissions.

How it works

Fastened to the head, the rigid shell forms the roof of the valvetrain. Oil splashes beneath it while internal baffles separate vapor from liquid, routing fumes to the intake. The perimeter gasket and bolt grommets stop seepage. Many engines mount ignition coils and harness guides on this cover for neat, service-friendly routing.

What happens if it’s damaged

Cracks or warpage cause wet oil on the block, burnt-oil smell, and drips on the exhaust. Oil in plug tubes can misfire. Low oil level speeds wear and raises temps. A PCV leak from a poor seal leads to rough idle, higher fuel use, and a check engine light. Dirt entry accelerates cam and lifter wear—replace promptly to restore sealing and ventilation.
