Rear Axle Shaft Oil Seal RH/LH

This precision lip seal keeps differential gear oil inside the rear axle tube and away from brakes and bearings. Built for high-mileage Toyotas, it locks out dust and water while holding the right oil film on the axle journal for smooth, quiet running .

Why this part is needed

Without a healthy axle seal, gear oil leaks onto the backing plate and brake hardware, contaminates pads/shoes, and starves the diff and wheel bearings. Sealing correctly saves the ring and pinion, bearings, and brakes from costly damage.

How it works

A heat-resistant elastomer lip and garter spring hug the axle shaft. As the shaft rotates, the lip meters oil back inward and blocks debris. The housing press-fits squarely into the axle end; one unit fits either right or left side .

What happens if it’s broken

Signs include wet inner wheel, burnt-oil smell on braking, humming bearing, ABS sensor fouling, and gear whine from low oil. Prolonged leaks can cause bearing seizure and differential failure ⚠️.

Tech tips

• Replace in pairs; lube the lip with 75W-90 before install.
• Inspect axle journal for grooves; clean the breather.
• Press in square; verify retainer torque and runout.
