Steering Rack End Assembly ⚙️

This inner tie rod (rack end) links the steering rack to the outer tie rod, turning wheel input into precise road wheel angle. It keeps steering tight, stable, and predictable. Built with hardened steel and a sealed ball-and-socket, it handles heavy loads and rough roads with confidence.

Why it’s needed

Without a healthy rack end, the steering develops play, alignment drifts, and tires scrub. This part maintains toe setting, absorbs road shocks, and protects the rack from impact and vibration.

How it works

The threaded shank screws into the rack. A greased spherical joint moves freely under a protective boot, transmitting rack motion to the outer tie rod. Internal preload keeps the joint tight, reducing knock and wander.

What happens if it’s worn or broken ❗

  • Clunk over bumps, loose on-center feel, steering shimmy.
  • Uneven tire wear and pull under braking.
  • Torn boot or grease seepage, corrosion inside the joint.
  • In severe failure: sudden loss of steering control and rack damage.

Tech tips

  • Replace in pairs, torque to spec, then do a wheel alignment.
  • Inspect boots and clamps; renew if cracked.
  • Use thread locker where specified and verify inner joint preload.
