Steering Pitman Arm Assembly for Heavy-Duty Control

This steering drop arm links the steering box to the drag link. It converts the gearbox rotation into a left/right push that turns the wheels. Built from forged steel with a precise spline and tapered seat, it keeps steering tight, predictable, and safe on- and off-road.

Why you need it

A healthy Pitman arm holds steering geometry and keeps the vehicle tracking straight. It reduces play in the wheel, stabilizes the front end, and protects tires from feathering and uneven wear. It is critical for larger 4x4 SUVs that carry weight and see rough roads.

How it works

When you turn the wheel, the sector shaft of the steering box rotates. The arm swings in an arc and moves the drag link side to side. The splined mount locks to the shaft; a tapered joint and hardware secure the link. The result is smooth, direct steering input.

What happens if it’s broken ⚠️

Symptoms include free play, clunking, steering wander, shimmy, poor return-to-center, and rapid tire wear. In severe cases, the vehicle may lose steering authority. Replace immediately if the spline is worn, the taper is loose, or the stud/seat shows play or torn boot.

Tech tips

Use puller tools, new lock hardware, and torque to factory spec. Recheck toe and center the wheel after installation. Grease compatible joints as needed and inspect every service interval.
