Mitsubishi Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for precise throttle control βš™οΈ

This TPS sits on the throttle shaft and tells the ECU exactly how far the butterfly is opened. It’s essential for smooth take-off, crisp acceleration, stable idle, and correct fuel and ignition mapping. Without an accurate signal, the engine can’t meter fuel properly, hurting drivability and economy.

Why it’s needed

The ECU uses TPS data to coordinate fuel injection, ignition timing, idle control, EGR logic, and even automatic transmission shift points. Correct voltage at closed and wide-open throttle keeps starts clean, shifts timely, and emissions low.

How it works

Inside is a precision potentiometer/Hall element that converts throttle angle into a linear 0.5–4.5 V signal. At closed throttle it outputs about 0.45–0.7 V, rising smoothly with pedal input. The ECU monitors rate-of-change for tip-in enrichment and throttle cut on decel.

When it fails ⚠️

  • Rough or high idle, stalling, flat spots
  • Poor fuel economy, sluggish response
  • Harsh/late shifts on AT
  • Check Engine Light (e.g., P0120–P0123)
  • Limp mode or failed emissions

Tech tips for replacement ️

  • Mark old position; install and lightly rotate to set base voltage
  • Perform idle/throttle relearn with a scan tool if required
  • Inspect connector pins and throttle shaft for play
