Ignition Coil: The Heartbeat of Your Engine

An ignition coil is an essential component of a vehicle's ignition system. Its primary function is to transform the battery's low voltage into thousands of volts necessary to create an electric spark in the spark plugs, which then ignites the fuel in the engine. Without this part, starting your vehicle would be impossible, and your engine would remain silent.

How It Works

Modern ignition coils function as a transformer that boosts the 12 volts from your battery to a much higher voltage, ranging between 12,000 to 45,000 volts. This process occurs in two stages: the primary winding and secondary winding. As the electric current flows through the primary winding, it creates a magnetic field. When this current is interrupted, the magnetic field collapses, inducing a high voltage current in the secondary winding sent to the spark plugs, igniting the air-fuel mixture.

Why Is It Needed

The ignition coil is crucial for ensuring efficient engine operation and fuel combustion. A healthy ignition coil guarantees that your vehicle starts smoothly, operates efficiently, and maintains optimal fuel economy.

Consequences of a Broken Ignition Coil

If an ignition coil becomes faulty, you might experience a range of issues including misfires, rough idling, decreased fuel economy, and even complete engine stalling. A broken coil can also cause the engine to run rich, leading to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter over time.
