Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor βš™οΈ

This sensor is a key input for the ECU to know where the crankshaft is and how fast it spins. It is needed to time fuel injection and ignition correctly, especially during starting and hard acceleration. Without accurate crank position data, the engine management cannot β€œsync” the combustion cycle.

How it works ?

Mounted near the crank pulley or flywheel, it reads a trigger wheel (tone ring) as teeth pass by. The sensor converts this movement into an electrical signal. The ECU uses that signal to calculate RPM and exact crank angle, then commands coils and injectors at the right moment.

Signs of failure & what happens if it breaks ?

  • Cranks but won’t start (no RPM signal)
  • Random stalling when hot or at idle
  • Misfire, hesitation, poor fuel economy
  • Check Engine light and loss of power

If the sensor fails completely, the ECU may cut spark/fuel for safety, leaving the vehicle stranded.
