Transmission Neutral Position Switch ⚙️
This small electrical switch tells the vehicle when the gearbox is in Neutral. It’s needed for safe starting logic and correct signals to the engine/ECU and dashboard. When Neutral is detected, the switch closes/opens an internal contact and sends a clean on/off voltage signal through the harness—simple, fast, and reliable when in good condition.
How it works
The switch is mounted on the transmission case and is triggered by the shift rail/selector. As you move the shifter into Neutral, the internal plunger aligns and the circuit changes state. This helps prevent wrong start conditions and supports stable idle strategy on some setups.
If it fails ?
- Hard/no start in certain positions, or starting only intermittently
- Incorrect neutral indication, warning lights, or odd ECU behavior
- Possible rough idle or drivability quirks due to wrong gear status input
- In rare cases, safety risk if the system can’t confirm neutral correctly
