Airbag Sensor Return Spring β€” SRS Safety Component ?️

This precision spring (ref. 8619A016) is a small but vital part of the Supplemental Restraint System. It keeps the crash sensor’s moving element centered and preloaded so the airbag control unit reads true deceleration. Without the correct spring force, the sensor can drift, give noisy signals, or fail to trigger at the right time.

Why you need it βš™οΈ

Road vibration, heat cycles, and corrosion slowly weaken springs. A fresh, correctly rated spring restores factory sensor bias, stabilizes impact readings, and helps prevent false warnings.

How it works

Inside (or beneath) the G-sensor, a mass/plunger sits against this spring. In normal driving the spring holds a neutral position. During a severe hit, inertia overcomes the spring rate, the circuit switches, and the SRS ECU decides on deployment. Afterward, the spring returns the mechanism to zero. Material hardness, free length, and preload are precisely matched to the sensor.

If it fails ⚠️

Typical signs: SRS lamp on, stored DTCs, intermittent chime, or harsh bumps causing warnings. In most cases the ECU disables the airbag to avoid unintended deploymentβ€”meaning reduced occupant protection until repair. Replace immediately.

Technician tips ?

Disconnect battery and wait 10–15 minutes. Handle parts gently, keep the sensor seat clean, torque fasteners to spec, then clear codes and run an SRS health check with a scan tool.
