Brake Pedal Stop-Lamp Switch — OE ref: 8614A168
Why you need it
This small switch sits at the brake pedal bracket and tells the car when you press the pedal. It powers the rear stop lights, informs the ECU, and on many models unlocks the shifter from Park and cancels cruise control. A healthy switch keeps you visible to traffic and keeps safety systems in sync.
How it works
A spring-loaded plunger moves with the pedal. Inside, dual circuits change state: one feeds 12V to the stop lamps, the other sends a signal to control units (ABS/ASC/ECU). Threaded body allows fine adjustment so the lamps trigger the moment you brake.
When it fails ⚠️
- No brake lights or lights stuck on
- Can’t shift out of Park
- Cruise won’t set; warning lamps may appear
- Battery drain if lights stay on
Tech tip
Install and adjust with 0.5–1.0 mm pedal free play at the switch. Tighten the lock nut, then test: pedal tap should light the lamps instantly; release should turn them off cleanly.
