Hydraulic Power Steering Pump Assembly 🛠️
This pump assembly is a key part of the power steering system. It is needed to create strong hydraulic pressure so the steering wheel stays light and easy to control, especially during parking and low-speed turns.
How It Works ⚙️
The pump is driven by the engine belt and pulls fluid from the reservoir. Inside, vanes/rotor action pressurizes the fluid and sends it to the steering rack control valve. When you turn the wheel, the valve directs pressure to assist left or right movement, then fluid returns to the reservoir for reuse.
Signs the Pump Is Failing 🚨
If the pump is worn or leaking, steering becomes heavy and noisy. You may hear whining, groaning, or a growl when turning. Low pressure can cause jerky assist and slow steering return.
What Happens If It Breaks ❌
A broken pump can lead to sudden loss of steering assist, fluid contamination, and damage to the rack and hoses. Continued driving may overheat the fluid, increase belt load, and cause leaks that can reach hot engine parts.
