Shift & Select Control Cable Assembly ⚙️
This control cable assembly links your gear lever to the transmission selector mechanism. It is needed to transfer your hand movement into accurate gear selection, especially in tight engine bays where solid rods can’t route cleanly. A good cable keeps shifting light, precise, and consistent in all temperatures.
How It Works
Inside the outer sheath, a steel inner cable slides smoothly as you move the shifter. One motion handles the “shift” path, the other manages the “select” path (side-to-side gate). The end fittings hold alignment, while the liner reduces friction so the transmission lever lands exactly on the chosen gear.
When It Fails
A worn or stretched cable can cause hard shifting, missed gears, or a sloppy shifter feel. If the sheath cracks or the cable frays, you may get sticking, popping out of gear, or total loss of gear engagement—leaving the vehicle stuck in one gear or unable to select any gear. Driving with a damaged cable can also stress the selector arm and bushings.
