Engine Phase Position Sensor (Camshaft Timing Sensor) ?βοΈ
This sensor is needed to help the ECU know the exact camshaft position and engine phase. With this signal, the engine can fire the injectors and ignition at the right moment, keeping power smooth, fuel use correct, and emissions under control.
How It Works β
The sensor reads a trigger wheel on the camshaft and converts movement into an electrical pulse. The ECU compares this pulse with the crankshaft signal to confirm timing and control variable valve timing (when equipped). This is critical for stable idle, clean acceleration, and quick starts.
When It Starts Failing β οΈ
If the sensor is weak or broken, the ECU loses phase reference. You may get hard starting, misfires, rough idle, sudden stalling, poor fuel economy, and a check engine light. In some cases the engine may go into limp mode, and prolonged driving can stress the catalytic converter due to unburned fuel.
