Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Assembly for Subaru
This small but vital sensor tells the ECU exactly how hot the engine coolant is. With accurate temperature data, your Subaru starts cleanly, runs smoothly, and keeps the radiator fan working at the right time. It protects the engine, improves fuel economy, and keeps emissions low.
Why it’s needed
The ECU uses the temperature signal to set fuel mixture, ignition timing, idle speed, and fan control. It also helps cold starts, prevents pinging, and stabilizes the air‑fuel ratio during warm‑up and cruising.
How it works
Inside is an NTC thermistor. As coolant warms, resistance drops. The ECU reads the voltage change and calculates true coolant temperature. That data triggers fan operation, adjusts fueling, and feeds the gauge/cluster.
What happens if it’s broken ⚠️
Expect hard cold starts, rough idle, poor MPG, rich or lean running, black smoke, overheating or fan stuck on/off, weak heater, and a check engine light. Long use can foul plugs and damage the catalytic converter. Replace promptly.
Tech tips ️
Install with a fresh O‑ring, clean seat, correct torque, and proper connector lock. Refill and bleed coolant, then clear fault memory. Avoid sealants that block sensor grounding.
