Engine Oxygen Feedback Sensor (Upstream) ?
This sensor is a key part of the fuel and emissions control system. It is needed to measure oxygen content in the exhaust so the ECU can correct the air/fuel mix in real time. When the mixture is right, you get smoother driving, cleaner emissions, and better fuel economy β½.
How It Works βοΈ
Mounted in the exhaust stream, the sensing element reacts to oxygen level changes and sends a fast voltage signal to the engine computer. The ECU uses this feedback to adjust injector pulse and keep combustion near ideal. On hybrids and plug-in hybrids, accurate feedback is even more important because the engine starts/stops often and must stabilize quickly.
What Happens If It Fails ?
A weak or dead sensor can force the ECU into a backup strategy, often running richer than needed. You may notice poor mileage, rough idle, hesitation, strong exhaust smell, failed emissions test, or a check engine light. Long-term driving with incorrect fueling can overheat the catalytic converter and increase carbon buildup.
Why Replacing It Matters β
Restoring correct oxygen feedback helps the ECU control fuel precisely, protects the catalyst, and brings back normal performance and efficiency.
